Ivy-leaved Toadflax

10 Aug 2025

I illustrated ivy-leaved toadflax (Cymbalaria muralis) in colored pencil.

The image depicts a clump of ivy-leaved toadflax with eleven open flowers and eight buds. Each flower has five delicate purple petals, fused into a bilabiate (two-lipped) corolla. The upper lip has two lobes that resemble rabbit ears. The lower lip has three lobes, with the central lobe forming a two-rounded structure marked with an orange-yellow blush. This part resembles a pair of eyes with yellow irises or pupils. At the back of each flower, a blue-purple spur (a tubular extension of the lower petal) is visible, even on some buds.

The leaves are waxy and dark green, often with a burgundy edge and underside. They are palmately lobed and shaped like small ivy leaves, with most showing five terminal lobes.
