Senescing Cherry Laurel with Bacterial Shot Hole
17 May 2026
I illustrated senescing spring leaves of cherry laurel infected with bacterial shot hole (Pseudomonas syringae).
The drawing shows three yellowing leaves, each with bacterial brown lesions. In the two lower leaves, the lesions at the edge of the leaf have dropped out, leaving characteristic holes. Chlorotic halos, surrounded by islands of green tissue, appear strikingly unusual against the yellow and brown tones of the dying leaves.
I created the drawing using Faber-Castell Polychromos, Prismacolor and Karisma pencils on Daler-Rowney Smooth Heavyweight 220 gsm paper.
I was delighted that this drawing was selected for and displayed in the Association of Botanical Artists online exhibition ‘Unusual’.
