Onion Bloat: Ditylenchus dipsaci on an onion

Jan 2026

Illustration of an onion plant infected with Ditylenchus dipsaci, showing the whole plant with roots and leaves, a horizontal cross-section of the bulb with concentric rings, and a vertical section showing internal tissue damage.

I illustrated Ditylenchus dipsaci on an onion, showing the visible effects of infection on the bulb and foliage. The main drawing depicts an onion plant with twisted and yellowing leaves, marked by pale patches that represent areas of tissue discolouration typical of onion bloat. The accompanying drawings show two sections: section A is a horizontal cut through the bulb revealing its concentric layers, while section B shows a longitudinal section illustrating internal tissue breakdown associated with infection. Together, these drawings depict the characteristic appearance of Ditylenchus dipsaci infection in onion plants..
