Phytoplasma Induced Phyllody on Catharanthus roseus

12 Oct 2025

Botanical illustration of Catharanthus roseus infected with phytoplasma, showing phyllody symptoms where petals turn green and leaf-like, with distorted flowers and abnormal floral structures

I painted Catharanthus roseus (Madagascar periwinkle) showing symptoms of phytoplasma infection.

The flowers, pictured in the four illustrations, are deformed with greenish-yellow petals and phyllody (leaf-like structures replacing floral organs). The drawing highlights the distinct morphological changes, such as greening of petals, abnormal petal shapes, and leafy flower structures, rendered in greens with pink accents.

The original photographs, used as reference images, were provided by Dr M Tuffen.
