I illustrated Hibiscus x rosa-sinensis in warm salmon-pink tones. I’ve spent far too long debating, both internally and with a couple of friends, whether the flower is pink, salmon, peach, orange, or some combination of those colours.

The drawing shows a tropical hibiscus bloom in soft salmon-pink and peach shades, with a deep purple centre. Three leaves can be seen behind the flower, and a gnarled stem with a single miniature leaf.

I drew the flower in Derwent Watercolour, Prismacolour and Karisma pencils on Daler Rowney Fine Grain Drawing Pad Cartridge Paper (120gsm).

I was delighted that this drawing was selected for and displayed in the Association of Botanical Artists online exhibition ‘Inspiration’.

The montage shows the progress images for my Hibiscus illustration.
