Rose Yellow Red

14 Dec 2025

A rose with yellow petals and red tips, drawn in coloured pencils on white cartridge paper.

I created a botanical illustration of a rose using a limited palette of four coloured pencils over three half-days, with each session being approximately three hours of planning and drawing.

From left to right:

  • Day 1: Cherry 0510 and Iron Green 1310 Derwent Inktense watercolour pencils used dry.

  • Day 2: Cherry 0510 Derwent Inktense pencil and a Yellow 916 Karisma pencil (wax-based with a soft core - good for blending).

  • Day 3: Dark Red 225 Faber-Castell Polychromos pencil (oil-based with a hard core - ideal for fine detail).

A progress montage of three photos of the same rose illustration. Left: dark green and red leaf and petal outlines. Centre: Yellow blending over the top, and red added over some leaf and stem areas. Right: darker red used to enhance the petals
